The fashion and textile industry is already the second largest source of water pollution in the world. Waste water from the dyeing process flows through our streams and rivers and eventually enters our oceans. The cleaning process from polyester fibre and other synthetic fibres commonly used in fast fashion products causes about 500,000 metric tons of microplastics to be discharged into the ocean every year, which accounts for a massive 35% of the total of all microplastic pollution entering our seas.
Choosing natural dyeing methods and natural fibres can reduce the damage to the ocean caused by textiles. Furthermore, the active collection and reuse of waste that pollutes our oceans, such as plastics, glass, fishing nets, Styrofoam, etc., is another way in which we can reduce negative impact by combining marine conservation with a Circular approach to textile manufacturing.
